FAU to Host Events in Honor of 2019 Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

will celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage with a series of events for students and staff beginning Saturday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 15, at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.
The 2019 Hispanic Heritage Month theme is “Hispanic Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation.” The theme invites all to reflect on Hispanic/Latinx American traditions, history and culture and how Hispanic/Latinx people have contributed to the United States.
The following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:
FUTUROS Retreat
Saturday, Sept. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Live Oak Student Union
This event is a discussion platform uniting the voices and experiences of our Hispanic/Latinx faculty, staff and students. Event topics include issues that affect the Hispanic/Latinx community, such as identity formation, immigration, cultural complexities, financial literacy and social justice.

Join Owls Care Health Promotion as we celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage through nutrition, movement, and other aspects of wellness. There will be fun interactive games and giveaways.

Memories of a Penitent Heart Film Screening
Thursday, Sept. 26 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Living Room Theaters
Viewing of documentary about diasporic queer Latinx experience excavates a buried conflict around filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo's uncle Miguel, who died at a time when AIDS was synonymous with sin. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and tells a moving story about family, faith and immigration in South Ƶ and Cuba. Tickets are free but must be reserved in-person through Living Room Theaters in advance.

Lavender Circle Lunch
Wednesday, Oct. 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Owls CARE Classroom
The lunch will unite Hispanic/Latinx faculty, staff, and students of the LGBTQ+ community to examine their identities as it relates to the intersectionality of these identities. Attendees will discuss strategies to navigate through society and the possible impacts it has on their personal and professional lives. Attendees will identify important LGBTQ+ resources across the FAU campus and in the South Ƶ community to aid in the growth of their support networks.
