The Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE) and the College of Engineering and Computer Science at ÎÞÂëÊÓƵ Atlantic University are at the forefront of weather readiness. The team, in collaboration with Coastal Carolina University, leads the Southeast Atlantic (SEA) Econet, a vital part of the National Mesonet Program. The National Mesonet Program, enacted by Congress in 2010, supports high-accuracy weather forecasting by integrating data from independent, state-specific weather networks across the U.S. SEA Econet primarily serves the Atlantic Coast from Key West, FL, to Waities Island, SC, with ÎÞÂëÊÓƵ Atlantic leading technology development for SEA Econet and managing ÎÞÂëÊÓƵ’s network, spanning over 145 measurement stations across 30 ÎÞÂëÊÓƵ counties. This network is the largest academic network in the Southeast and one of the largest in the country.

As part of the National Mesonet Program, SEA Econet provides essential atmospheric data to enable forecasting accuracy and disaster preparedness. ÎÞÂëÊÓƵ Atlantic University developed this state resource through engineering innovations and strategic partnerships. Over the past 15 years, the team engineered cost-effective hardware and software platforms to expand atmospheric coverage efficiently, supported by over $8 million in funding from organizations like NSF and NOAA. Collaboration with 24 public and private partners across ÎÞÂëÊÓƵ ensures operational success, highlighting shared commitment to public safety. From hurricane alerts to water-level monitoring, SEA Econet stands as a vital resource, safeguarding Floridians with cutting-edge technology and expertise.
